History:

Sentinel Instruments was established in 1984 to design, manufacture and distribute a range of marine crane safe-load indicators for the offshore oil and gas industry, and later expanded its product line to include bulk tank weighing systems, anchor chain tension monitoring systems, import/export riser in-haul monitors, and other customer- specific specialty products to enable accurate measurement and control of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical loading of oilfield machinery and ancillary equipment.

In 2004 the company introduced its next generation TI-880 multi-hook crane safe-load indicator, as well as a new bridge crane load indicator, marine riser bolt torque indicator, man-riding winch safe-load indicator, and a new range of industrial tension load indicators.

2005 saw the introduction of the DS-800-TL drill string load indicator, which when made-up to a rigs' top drive, allows for simultaneous measurement of tension and torque output from the top drive. The system is fully calibrated in tension and torque against measurement standards traceable to the National Physical Laboratory (London). The system has a working capacity of 2,000,000 lbs in tension and 85,000 ft-lbs in torque.

In 2006 Sentinel installed its first multi-point mooring load indicator in the Gulf of Mexico. The system allows for the measurement of tension in up to four (4) mooring lines, while transmitting the measured data by radio to the host rigs' bridge, as well as two (2) barge tenders (ocean going tugs). Recorded data is streamed in real time to a notebook computer on the host rigs' bridge.

In late 2007 the company introduced an upgraded DS-800-TL drill string load indicator which added a third measurement parameter - bending load. In addition, the tool has received ATEX certification for use in Zone 0 hazardous areas (continuous exposure to combustible gases).
